2009 World Pyro Olympics
In just a few days, the -ber months will arrive once again and remind us that Christmas is just around the corner and that a new year is about to come. The dawn of the -ber months is also a sign for Filipinos to save up for the yearly ninong-ninang gift giving to their godchildren.
But this year, the months of November and December will hold yet another amazing event. Not Christmas, nor the birthday celebration of my neighbor, rather, it will be the annual World Pyro Olympics 2009. Rumor has it that the week long fireworks festival will be staged on the last week of November and winners will be announce in the first week of December.
The World Pyro Olympics has become one of the Philippines' most prized event. It is participated by many countries from different continents. Some of the world's leaders when it comes to pyrotechnics come to the Philippines ans showcase their fireworks creativity.
The World Pyro Olympics started in 2004 merely as an exhibition event. Because of its huge success, it officially became a fireworks competition in 2005 alongside the declaration that it is the biggest international fireworks competition in the world. That year, Australia's Show Fx. Pty. won the title.
In 2006 the festival went on a break but kicked off again in 2007 with United Kingdom's Westcoast Fireworks team bagging home the title. Last year, it was Italy who was crowned a sthe World Pyro Olympics 2008 champion through their Parente Fireworks team.
The Philippines, being the host for the previous competition, is not allowed to join the competition although the La Mancha Group of the country performs a fireworks display every last night of the festival. This year, expect more creative fireworks, more colorful skies, and more competitive participants. Stay tuned for updates regarding the event.
PGI 2009 won't get to experience the IRON PYRO unique competition invented by Shogun Pyrotechnics in Hong Kong. It has been decided to postpone the event until 2010 so that applicants will have more time preparing for the competition. The competition may even review its application process to allow more variables in the process. To keep up with the Iron Pyro news go to http://www.ironpyro.com/

COMPETITION DETAILS
The Musical Fireworks Competition is a series of pyro-musical displays given by renowned fireworks manufacturers, each representing a different country. Each fireworks show lasts a minimum of 20 minutes. The fireworks are produced after dark.
After a manufacturers' shows, a jury of local personalities selects a winner which is acclaimed before the Grand Finale.
The last show - the Grand Finale - promotes the theme of the competition and is presented by the host city, Malaysia and producing the grand finale is Global2000
MUSCAL FIREWORKS - TECHNIQUE PYROMUSICAL ART
Pyro-musical synchronization is an art form that can only be mastered through experience. The teams that participate in the Competition possess the skills required to distinguish themselves at the summit of the Pyro-Musical Arts. The fireworks makers who design the 20-minute pyro-musical displays are more than just Pyro-Technicians; they are Artistic Innovators.
The designers use music as a starting point for the creation of the displays to be presented in Malaysia. The choice of music determines the rhythm and the meaning that the artist wants to give to the presentation. Then, the crucial step consists of selecting the pyrotechnics according to their esthetical and technical characteristics.
It is essential to take into account the timing, the seconds or fractions of second between the time a piece is launched and its release in the sky. Developing a plan for 20 minutes' worth of launches requires months and months of painstaking effort and work
The 1ST Malaysia International Fireworks Competition 2007
Malaysia International Fireworks Competition 2007 is one of the biggest International Musical Fireworks Competition of the world.
"One of the biggest" because the number of fireworks shows (20 minutes per show plus a Grand Finale of 30 minutes) will be launched on the basis of 2 shows per week.
"International" because it will feature fireworks from many different countries plus a Grand Finale given by Kuala Lumpur.
"Musical" because the fireworks will be synchronised to inspiring music, like marionettes that actually dance to music before the public's very eyes.
"Competition" because the participating countries will go all out to win the GOLDEN MERDEKA trophy.
PYROFEST & FRANK FURTADO PROFILE:
The first International Musical Fireworks Competition was initiated in 1985, in Montreal, Canada, by Frank Furtado.
The success was so immediate that he has since produced numerous world-renowned International Musical Fireworks Competitions. Five Canadian cities, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Quebec City and Ottawa-Hull were followed by Acapulco in Mexico, and Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa.
Musical Fireworks events are very popular and Frank Furtado has acquired extensive expertise in producing these events over the last two decades. This is why he is fully competent to produce International Musical Fireworks Championship.
An international fireworks championship where the World's best musical fireworks manufacturers will compete. A yearly event which blends perfectly with Kuala Lumpur's intention to establish itself as a modern trade centre as well as being a prime tourism attraction.

The final night of the World Fireworks Championships in Blackpool England took place last night (2/10/09)
Despite the terrrible weather conditions. The wind was blowing and there was a taste of rain in the air as Kimbolton Fireworks of the UK took centre stage to try to impress the brave citizens of Blackpool. Thousands of people flocked to Blackpool town centre to watch the spectacular finale.
Damp and windy weather meant a slightly shorter show, but spirits still soared as fireworks filled the sky.
“The weather was disappointing” said a spectator, “We came here to enjoy the fireworks and although they were very good, it was hard to see with a force 10 gale blowing in our eyes.” He went on to add, “At one point I thought the missus was going to get blown away, athough that may not have been a bad thing!”
The last to perform their dizzying display, was indeed Kimbolton Fireworks and ended four weeks of sensational shows as France, China, Ireland and Austria battled to be crowned the winners of the international competition.
But only one could claim victory, and this was China’s year.
Cindy Cheung, of the Vulcan International factory, said: “We are delighted to have won this year’s competition and are very proud of this achievement”.
and so the end has come, week after week we have all watched in owe as these fantastic firework fiends fought it out in the skies with their very own sound tracks, but in the end China stole the show.

The 2008 Montreal Competition Begins!
Detailed judging criteria, a newly renovated area and five new entrants
Pyrotechnicians from around the world and firework fanatics will come to Montreal in the forthcoming weeks as the 2008 edition of L'International des feux Loto-Québec, the Montreal International Firework Competition, begins on Saturday, June 21th. Contestants from nine countries will each display 30-minute pyromusical extravaganzas in an effort to win one of three Jupiter prize.
The popular jury, made up of 19 firework enthusiasts selected in the past weeks, will use a new performance evaluation grid. "Since a couple of years, we have felt need to be more specific about our criteria in order to help the jury and to draw attention to some aspects of a firework show" the director of the event Martyne Gagnon says to PyroPlanet.
Thus, two new judging criteria have been introduced. First, technical design is added to determine how well contestants use the available area, including the lake. Firework density and consistency are also important.
"Firework denseness must be sustained throughout the show. Of course, slower segments are required, but we don't want a display made of weak segments and just ending with a great finale" Gagnon explains.
A second new criterion is about the soundtrack, that is, the choice of music and most importantly, linking from one segment to the next. "During the jury training, we emphasized the fact that soundtrack criterion is not about the kind of music one likes or dislikes. We have to be able to value the pyrotechnic concept which surrounds the soundtrack."
The last remaining judging criterias within the evaluation grid are: pyrotechnic pieces (variety, quality and colours), pyromusical design (originality of products or originality of the way products are used, and rhythmic dynamics, including relationships between firework design, music, and theme) and synchronization.
Among other changes, the La Ronde site has been transformed around the lake. Some terraces were dismantled and new ones assembled above the former amusement park main midway. Now there are 7368 seats available. (There were around 7500 in the past.) This figure includes twelve VIP grandstands added at the top of the new terraces where the newly built control room is located.
Other changes include a new go-kart track close to the left side (from audience viewpoint) of the third firing ramp, made of floating platforms. Owing to safety rules about the distance to keep between the new ride and pyrotechnic area, the ramp width is slightly reduced. "The go-kart encroachment on the firing area is six meters or so" specifies Paul Csukassy, technical director. "In order to preserve symmetry in relation to the centre of the stage, we also cut the same length on the other side, that is, a total of 10-12 meters out of 150 meters." New low safety walls have been built.
The 2008 line-up includes five new entrants:
Prestatech-Artifices (France),
Pirotecnica Morsani (Italy),
Garden City Display Fireworks (Canada),
Pyrovision GmbH (Austria), and
Pyrotecnico (United States).
However, being a new entrant doesn't always mean that these pyrotechnicians will work for the first time in Montreal: cross-fertilization may occurs between companies. For instance, the Canadian Michael Bohonos (Garden City) worked at La Ronde with Royal Pyrotechnie in 2003 and Pyromagic (Hong Kong) in 2007.
Other contestants are:
Hanwha (South Korea),
Grupo Luso Pirotecnia (Portugal),
Howard and Sons (Australia), and
Sunny (China).
Panzera will produce the traditional off-competition closing show on August 6th.
In addition to PyroPlanet coverage, Paul Marriott's website, montreal-fireworks.com, will provide comprehensive reports of each display and hosts a forum allowing 'pyrofannatics' an opportunity to share their comments.
The soundtrack of each firework display will be broadcasted live on the local radio station 105,7 FM.d

Bad news for the firework industry. The EU has voted to approve the European Pyrotechnic Directive. UK officials were strongly opposed to the directive but once again were powerless against EU bureaucracy. The directive wrongly assumes that most firework accidents are caused by faulty fireworks and that the directive will make things safer. In fact only a very small number of accidents are caused by faulty products, most being caused by user error such as leaning over a lit firework. UK fireworks are already some of the safest available thanks to British Standards, which are fairly straightforward to comply with. In future all fireworks will have to CE marked. The enormous costs involved threatens the future of most European firework companies with no perceivable benefit. The time scale is three years for Category 3 consumer fireworks and five years for Category 4 professional fireworks.

Roy Lowry's rocket launch at the British Firework Championships at Plymouth (16 August) has beaten Terry McDonald's record firing of 39210 rockets in 1997. The judgement on whether the new rocket shoot (of about 50,000 Black Cat rockets) has been confirmed by The Guinness Book of Records. The full story of the successful record attempt will be told in issue 51 of Fireworks by Roy himself.
HSE issue a derogation to the new UN default firework classifications. The document enables importers and manufacturers to continue using the existing 2003 defaults until July 2007. After this date there is a sell on period of 9 months to dispose of any remaining stock. After March 2008 all but the smallest rockets will become 1.3G making them impossible for shops to store and very difficult for suppliers of display packs to transport. Any cakes with any report units in will become 1.1 making them impossible to import or transport even for professional display operators. Large shells for professional use have already become 1.1 and are being phased out. Once existing stocks have been used it is very unlikely they will ever been seen again in the UK.
